Call Me Crazy!!!

All the vampires walkin’ through the valley
Move west down Ventura Blvd.
And all the bad boys are standing in the shadows
And the good girls are home with broken hearts

And I’m free, I’m free fallin’

Yes, I said it.  Call me crazy…but don’t call me if you’re doing something shady in crypto.  Here’s the problem I have as someone genuinely interested in the cryptocurrency and blockchain space.  It’s full of scams and outright bullshit that mostly gains traction because of a lack of knowledge.  It really takes time and research to understand the why behind the what of crypto.  If you haven’t spent the time to do that research you’ll either wind up shipwrecked or wrecking ships.

My journey into the world of Blockchain has been fascinating and I’m eager to see it continue but not at the cost of my integrity.  There are others in the space who don’t have such restrictions.

Here’s an interesting info graphic, it’s a post mortem on all of the activity from 2017 in the ICO space:

With a landscape like this I knew I’d find some shady stuff.  I just didn’t think it would knock on my front door.  It’s ok I tendered my resignation just in time.  Now I’m free fallin’ but at least I live in California 🙂

I’m an Expert

2018 World Blockchain Conference – Rome (they called me an expert)

It’s taken a lifetime but I’ve found my calling.  When I was a kid I locked my Art Teacher in the art supply room during class.  I left him in there for several minutes even fending off other kids in class who wanted to let him out.  I never liked that art teacher.

I’ve always been disruptive and for most of my life it’s gotten me in trouble.  I’m sure that will continue to be the case.  However, I’m finding that one of my greatest weaknesses was actually a strength all along waiting for the right time and place.

Disruption is a necessary part of innovation.  Technologists understand that disruption pays dividends and that’s why VC’s clamor for early rounds in the next Uber, PayPal, Amazon, Tesla, etc.

Now we’re entering a time when the next wave of disruption has a chance to actually change the world and make it better for the little guy.  Unlike Uber who took a win/win and made it a win/lose.  My hope is that blockchain and cryptocurrency projects will take notes from previous eras of technological innovation and the disruption that inevitably follows, and be better.  This was Satoshi’s vision of the future and we should strive to achieve a better outcome for a planet rapidly changing, a population exponentially growing, and a financial system woefully inept at servicing the needs of everyone in just, transparent, and equitable ways.

It’s time to lock the art teacher away and let the kids reimagine the world.  I’m willing to do the work to make way for that even if it means I have to disrupt class itself.  My resume goes way back in that regard.

Now they call me “Expert”.  😉

How about you?

Waste Products

Today I was greeted at home by this piece of junk mail on our coffee table.  Normally, I ignore this wastedump spot in our house because it’s littered with pointless distractions, gimmicks, and maybe every once in awhile a bill or notice I want to avoid.

Today however, I stopped in my tracks.  Sometimes the Universe speaks through the oddest medium.  This afternoon it was this piece of eye catching waste trying to manipulate my fingers to open it, I didn’t.  Instead, I extracted the value of the thought, got the message, and completely ignored the underlying gimmick.

The trash can is still your destiny, Envelope!

It’s my job to Love myself

I’ve been thinking a lot about love.  Not romantic wine and roses kinda love.  Another kind of love.  I call it changing poopy diapers kind of love.  Wine and Roses is pretty easy…poopy diapers not so much.

Sometimes I have to change my own poopy diapers.  In fact isn’t that the task of adulthood?  Changing your own diapers… (it’s a metaphor, go with it)

  1. conscious knowledge of one’s own character, feelings, motives, and desires.
“the process can be painful but it leads to greater self-awareness”

I decided to write what should have been on the inside of that piece of junk mail.

Dear Alistair,

This is the Universe it’s our pleasure to write you today.  A wise Sensei once said

“The first in importance is, love God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence and energy.’ And here is the second: ‘Love others as well as you love yourself.’ There is no other instruction that ranks with these.”

Now give yourself every advantage; because today for a limited time, We are providing you with an opportunity to transform poopy diapers like this piece of Junk Mail into gold…and if you act now, maybe even Bitcoin.

Best Regards,

Life Foundation

Summer Reading

This summer I’m traveling to Europe and Israel.  Today I stopped by Barnes and Noble to pick up some journals and came across a reading selection I couldn’t resist.

This picture basically sums up my life in a Thousand Words.

get rekt Internet

Silicon Valley

Today I’m sitting in one of those cool collaborative work spaces in the Bay Area.  People are coming and going and there are reminders like the one above posted everywhere like mental lily pads guiding my mind across the stream of consciousness that is the blockchain.  There’s a sunny sky and a peaceful breeze blowing through the trees outside.  It’s one of those precious moments of peaceful contentment.  It’s the perfect day for this reflection.

I’m a fighter.  Dad was Irish, his dad was really Irish.  That means there are a couple of things I’m genetically predisposed to enjoy; one is beer (and arguably whiskey) and the other is fighting.  Now I’m not much for fisticuffs but I will seriously shoot you in the face online and then laugh about it.  It’s not my best side but it’s for sure a part of who I am.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about my attitude toward technology and the troll that lives under the bridge of my online soul.  He kept me safe–that drunken fighting Irishman–and taught me a lot about the world.  But it’s becoming the time now to hang up some old mittens, pick up the paintbrush, take a vastly different approach, and let the world become an entirely new canvas.  Some people call this a fresh start others call it Spring.  I think I’ll call it maturity.

Don’t get me wrong I’ll still tell the Jabberwock to get rekt when it’s warranted.  A good counterpunch should always be a part of a man’s arsenal.  However, it’s time for the gentler side of the Shrek within my soul to lay down his sword and pick up some keys (maybe even private ones).  For wisdom I’m learning is much more like a key than a murder weapon.

I’m also learning that “winning the internet” is more about love than war. (but don’t you dare call me a hippy because I will end you like Donald Trump is about to end Iran)

Also someone please tell Travis with a K.
